I am going to admit a double standard here.
If Austin Murphy had asked it and printed the answer in this week's SI, I have no problem with it.
But because Clay Travis asked it in a room full of his buddies at SEC Media Days, it rubs me the wrong way.
Probably because I think Travis (and a lot of the blogosphere) do things just for their own amusement/notoriety. This felt like Travis wanting to put his name out there, and knowing his people (Deadspin, Big Lead and all the rest) would support him to the end of the earth and proclaim any backlash just the stodgy old media being old and stodgy.

The fascination the media, and society, have with openly good-guy/supposedly clean-living, nice, normal people, really is amazing.

I think it's more a case of those of us who tire of goody goody portrayals waiting for the other shoe to drop. We're waiting for the day when we find out Saint Tebow is an wife-beating, alcohol abusing, beer gut-carrying caricature of the image he's worked so hard to portray. And when that day comes, we'll be eager to pounce on him and call him a hypocrite, no matter how hypocritical that makes us.

I had never heard of Clay Travis until reading this thread. But undoubtedly, I will end up doing a Google search on him to see a larger sample of his work and to make my own opinion of him.

That's part of the spinoff from putting one's name out there -- valid or not.

Well, wouldn't you do it if you were them? Tebow's bodily fluids do bring you everlasting life, good fortune, happiness, wealth, love, etc. When those guys lose their jobs, they know that they'll be taken care of by a higher power.

It's not a question I'd ever ask during a press conference, but if I were doing a takeout on the person and could frame it in a different context, during a private setting? I can see where the question might be relevant. And the answer, "It's none of your business" would certainly be justified.

I think the whole concept of virginity is pretty skewed these days, anyway. Virgin to what? Intercourse? Oral? What? Where is the line drawn?

Either way, I don't find it that big of a deal if someone has had sex, and I'm saying that as a Christian. There's a difference between going out and trying to get some every night with random girls--the six hookers and a donkey someone mentioned--and having sex with someone you've been with forever and love and all that.

But maybe he hasn't done anything.

But why does anyone really care that much? It's sex. Your life is better off staying away from random sex with random people, and that's just a fact. That's one of those religious issues that's become way blown out of proportion.

Not bad, compared to what? Compared to the average fan-boy blogger, maybe. Compared to a pro, he'd be covering high school games at most papers, if they hired him at all.

Sorry, but there is no level of famous at which I care whether an athlete has had sex. I don't care if he's the most religious athlete in the world. It's a private question with no relevance.

Let's play the easy card here: Imagine the uproar if it had been asked of a 21-year-old female athlete. It's a double-standard, but it's the same invasion of privacy. That Tebow was comfortable answering -- in a disarming way no less -- doesn't change the fact that it wasn't OK to ask in the first place. Certainly not in a public forum at a presser being broadcast on an ESPN network.

I think Tebow would have been well within his rights to say "None of your business" but he didn't. The fact that he answered and the answer he gave tells you something about what kind of person he is. It's up for you to judge, but it gives a piece of information to weigh.

That's what journalists are supposed to do.

I know nothing about Clay. Had never heard of him before this happened. But as a very first impression, which is what this was for me and countless other people, it IS that bad.
