Tiki - From Media Darling to the Antichrist Overnight.

Saw him interviewed for the book on the Today show yesterday, by new colleague Matt Lauer.

To Lauer's credit, he asked all the right questions, ie, why throw Eli under the bus, why rip Coughlin, was it just to make a TV splash for the new career, etc.

Tiki's answers were painfully rigid and rehearsed--no charm, no candor. His new made-for-TV personality reminds me of my friends with too much botox....it doesn't look good, it just looks phony.

Perfect explanation.

He's the perfect product of overcoaching by his producers. He'll either master it, and incorporate some of their instructions with his real personality, or we'll be stuck with this new Tiki for as long as it takes for him to alienate everyone and vanish from the airwaves.

I like him. I envy him his enormous teeth. It's like a trip to Finland.

Now that made me laugh out loud. Between Tiki's teeth and Peter King talking out of side of his mouth this should has me nuts.

There is also something wrong with Tiki's jacket / short collar combination - it just does not work. still has the jock in a suit look.

Whatever happened to Todd Christensen, anyway?

I would love Tom Coughlin's official response to Tiki to be: "Boo ****ing Hoo", then ask for the next question.

I would love Tom Coughlin's response to be "Yabba-dabba-wobba-goop!," after which the bolts in his neck loosen and the tiny springs come popping out of his ears and he runs down the hall in his underwear setting things on fire and talking to the little men only he can see.
Mine is more realistic, I think.

Tiki's head is HUGE! Isn't there a cartoon character from SNL with a huge brain? That's who tiki reminds me of. On camera he comes off as too smooth and calculating.
Anybody think Tiki would be on the Today show if he spent his career in Denver or Atlanta, let alone get a book deal? He's a poor man's Roger Craig.

Those seeds must be kept warm.

Gilligan, if those seeds die, WE DIE!

Dammit, you stole my joke.

Why have the media turned on Tiki? Because he left their beloved Giants. Simple. He had the audacity to retire while his limbs were still functioning. He chose to walk away from a brutal sport while he could still walk. Shame on him. A real man, of course, would have kept going until leading the almighty Giants to the promised land; he would have forsaken his long-term health in the name of a trophy.
The football establishment, which confuses its rigors with war, cannot comprehend Tiki Barber.

The football establishment doesn't like drama queens. Sorry.

Wicked's right.

The media doesn't dislike Tiki because he walked away from the game. It's because he was nothing more than a spoiled twit in his last two years and has done nothing but act like a jerk since he's retired.

I posted this in the Giants' books thread, but it bears repeating:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/09052007/sports/giants/two_faced_tiki.htm?page=0
But if you’ve seen Barber’s work before, this can’t surprise you. A few years ago, after that awful season-ending loss to the 49ers in January 2003, I wrote a column blaming Jim Fassel, Michael Strahan and Barber equally for that cataclysmic collapse. Fassel, being Fassel, shook it off. Strahan, being Strahan, went on the radio, ripped me right back, and added that Tiki had called him and said, “Yeah, I can’t believe the guy in The Post killed you, Michael.”

Tiki, being Tiki, left a long, rambling message on my voicemail that ended this way: “You know, I can understand you ripping Strahan, but why do you have to kill me?”

I kept that little tale out of the newspaper, because it seemed needlessly embarrassing. Only now, it’s obvious Barber will say just about anything to keep his name on the lips of his Big Blue public. And that he is eminently un-embarrass-able, especially as he keeps throwing different versions of his retirement story out there. He’s bound to get it right eventually.

HB's provided a precise summation . . . at least, until Tiki get off his high horse and begins to act like something other than a manipulative priss.

Put here since I don't know where else to put it ...

Wow. Mariotti made himself sound dumb by suggesting that the Giants try to bring Tiki back next year. Oy.
