60 film historians, festival programmers and archivists from around the world rank the top 30 films of the decade.

Not exactly mainstream stuff, even by artsy standards.

Reader comments are pretty predictable--divided pretty much as expected.

The sad part isn't the usual response of "elitist drivel" by people raised on Hollywood, but that even in a major movie market like Toronto, you'd never have even a chance to see these movies outside of TIFF or a foreign film festival.

"Hmmmm, let's see, dear, do you want to see, 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' or 'Werckmeister Harmonies'?"

I've only seen six films on that list. I own five of them on DVD and wouldn't mind owning the sixth.

I see 100 movies a year and have never even heard of most of those...

Of these I've seen:

History of Violence
Mulholland Drive
Talk to Her
The Royal Tenenbaums

Your average moviegoer has seen nothing on that list.

These days, $100 million is considered a hit. I'd bet no film on that list made $30 mil.

Obviously financial success is not the only way to measure the quality of a movie, but it says something that there isn't a single mainstream movie on that list.

History of Violence might be the only film on that list that got a wide release in the U.S.

I remember having to go to the independent theaters to see Mulholland Drive and Tenenbaums.

Luckily I need some new netflix movies to watch and they have every one of these.
Speaking of TIFF, best movie of the last decade was Jiminy Glick LaLaWood Fables, filmed at the Toronto Film Fest.

I'm a movie snob -- and readily admit it -- but I've only seen two of those.

I'm Not There was very interestingly done, and I'm not sorry I saw it, but great? No.

Far From Heaven was an excretion.

Agree completely.

I've seen The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and was fairly bored throughout. Never even heard of anything higher on the list. Cache was interesting enough, I guess. Mulholland Drive's a screwed-up mess that was supposed to be a TV series. A History of Violence was good, but the graphic novel had a better finale. Pan's Labyrinth is a great-looking movie.

That's all I've seen, and almost all I've heard of off there.

I still don't get the hatred for Crash, I thought it was brilliant. I know a lot of people think Brokeback should have won that year. I liked Brokeback, Ledger was awesome, but I think Crash was a better film.

Sure, I see plenty of flicks. I've seen 4 or 5 on that list and I've seen plenty of Hollywood crap (Crash is Hollywood crap).
Just saw "Detour" based on Erroll Morris' list of the five best films of all-time. It was great and silly.
