It looks like they saw what Phil Knight did at with the court at Oregon, saw that it was successful but couldn't figure out why, and told their design people "give me something like that."

If you're not aware, that is a Schnellenberger phrase he used when talking about recruiting the area schools and keeping the top kids home. It's how Miami became a national power in the previous century. Nevertheless, I love a lot of Miami's uniforms, but those things are hideous. I thought Chef was dealing in a bit of hyperbole on the shoes, but he might be right.
