The Virginian-Pilot, based in Norfolk, Va., is a 200,000-circulation daily newspaper serving residents of southeastern Virginia, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. We are the flagship newspaper of Landmark Publishing, a division of Landmark Communications, Inc. The Virginian-Pilot is one of the largest newspapers in the country, ranking 50th among the 100 top newspapers, and has won multiple journalism awards, including three Pulitzer Prizes.
We are seeking a Sports Editor who will be responsible for the staffs and production of Sports section. The successful candidate will display innovation, fresh thinking and creativity in the development of The Pilot’s Sports sections. This person will also, among other qualifications, demonstrate effectiveness at managing change, solving problems, making decisions, resolving conflict and developing people.
Essential Functions:
• Creates vision for the section each year, setting goals for coverage and working with direct reports to anticipate big stories, plan special sections well in advance and quickly adjust to news.
• Supervises assistant editors and columnists, helping set direction and tone of the section.
• Provides leadership, direction and feedback to direct reports, setting goals for accuracy, urgency, convergence, enterprise.
• Edits articles for clarity, completeness, fairness and mechanics.
• Supports and helps develop multimedia efforts, including LNC and online.
• Critiques each day’s newspaper with an eye toward making tomorrow’s paper better.
• Handles day-to-day planning, including updating budgets and attending daily and weekend news meetings.
• Works with artists, designers, copy editors and photographers to display stories to their maximum potential and engage readers.
• Works with special sections editor and across departments to ensure that special sections have ample space and color positions, are promoted and that advertising is aware of opportunities for their clients in these sections.
• Meets deadlines.
Basic Qualifications:
• Track record of leading significant reporting and section efforts.
• Demonstrated ability to recognize news and ability to react quickly.
• Superior editing skills; an editing exercise will be required.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work across departments within the newsroom.
• Demonstrated ability to take on increasing levels of responsibility.
• Thorough understanding of libel law.
Education/Experience:
• 10 years of daily newspaper experience, including at least 5 years in a newsroom supervisory role
• Track record of excellence in previous journalistic roles
Preferred Qualifications:
• 10 years of daily newspaper experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role in a sports department.
