The ultimate style question

Someone in my shop just asked me this question and my brain overheated.

What is the proper way to signify the title of something (ex: book or movie) if it was said as part of a quote, within another quote.

Works of art -- be they paintings, literature, or creations of Hollywood -- are italicized. Why is that difficult?

My bad ... I thought the CP Style Guide and the AP Style Guide were close on everything except the spelling of a few words.

After a Google search, however, I've learned y'all put quote marks around works of art. So ... my apologies.

But I like our way better.

Many U.S. newspapers do not use italics and instead use quote marks for works of art, publications, performances, etc. Some do.

AP's policy on quotes for compositions, etc., stems to its long-time inability to transmit italics. Some newspaper front-end systems cannot receive italics, hence the use of quotes.

Mostly, though, this style point is just a vestige of technology gone by.

So while italics would be the simple answer, but it ain't the only one.

Nah, MacDaddy's right. You go from double to single and then back to double again if it's necessary. Which hopefully it never is.

The answer on AP and no italics is obviously correct, but most places I've worked in the past 20 or more years convert to italics.

And yeah, you just keep going back and forth between single and double quotes.

you might also be surprise how many people believe it should be italicized because that's the way it is in the ap stylebook. even when i explain the italics is simply used as an example of coorect or incorrrect usage, they don't budge.
