A rebel battle flag has been raised as part of memorial off I 95 just
outside Richmond.

One fun quote:

"As sons and daughters of the South, we have inherited a birthright. Ours is a proud heritage."

So what heritage are they talking about? The heritage of slavery? Of denying certain members of the population basic civil rights? The heritage of putting a rebel flag on the roof of the car and yelling "YEE-HAH!" What heritage?

The new and revised Confederate States of America isn't far behind. And, no, it won't include Obamacare.

Isn't this nothing more than a high school painting a rock on the hill overlooking their rival after being outscored 50-6?

I could see this happening in some other parts of the country but I've
never thought of The Richmond area as this backwards.

I've said for a while that we need a northern and southern US. They get everything west of I-95, everything south of I-70 and everything east of the Arizona border,.

Southern heritage?? Please.

I am as ass-backwards conservative as anyone on this board but the Rebel flag has no place in our society. A tradition of slavery, the formal attempt to destroy the nation and then after starting a war that killed so many, many Southerners made it their mission to make life as miserable as possible for minorities for 100 years.

Ahem, Boom. A quick style edit for regional dialect:

"The South Done Done It Again"

Carry on.

Ohhhhh hell yes it is.

It boggles the mind that a region that is supposed to be so darn patriotic and loves America so much is also so quick to celebrate war criminals and treasonous bastards who killed thousands of Americans.

They've been harboring Tawana Brawley for years.

The heritage of protesting the first time a Republican was elected President.

With the appropriate "fools rush in ..." disclaimer ...

1) Is this little piffle (the park) the doing of "The South"?

2) "The South," in venerating Civil War heroes, celebrates war criminals?

Other than being in a museum and shown in proper context, the Confederate flag is a pointless symbol that should no longer be flown in public.

BTW, how come do we never hear about Northern heritage?

Earlier this month, I got in a very spirited discussion with my in-laws (one of whom is from Ohio, the other Solano County, Calif.) on the subject of the Civil War's losing side. They were a bit too sympathetic I thought. Theirs is the argument that the Southerners were simply fighting for states' rights and that they were, above all else, Americans. Ummm, yeah...

I matter-of-factually argued the Confederates were NOT Americans, given their military fought AGAINST the United States military and their capital was not Washington D.C. And I don't think "Americans" would invade Pennsylvania.

We all live in El Dorado County, about 45 minutes up the hill from Sacramento and on the way to South Lake Tahoe. I never thought this subject would be this close to my front door, literally: Two houses up the street sits a garage with BOTH Old Glory AND the Dixie Flag hanging prominently on the wall. I see the Stars and Bars flapping from some idiot's pickup truck at least once a month.
