The smell in Carson, CA

Few things too Modesto when the tallow plant was still working. Or nearby Atwater during canning season.

Jerome, Idaho, feedlots. There's a really stinky one on I-25 south of Las Cruces, too.

Living in a city with a land-grant university, there were some pretty smelly days from the dairy barns and fertilizing some fields. Somehow that has really been curtailed, though.

Dodge City, Kansas, has a particularly fertile smell. Amarillo, too.

Paper mill towns, almost always. Driving through Spring Grove, Pa., during a summer afternoon was not fun. Eventually they did something to lessen the aroma.

But Hamilton is the worst.

I’ve smelled the Las Cruces one.

Vado, NM.

Was driving through there with a colleague back in the mid-1990s, when we suddenly looked at each other with that “My God, did you fart?” kind of look.

coffeeman, I should add that Perry, Fla., is the last place I heard the N-word uttered among 'polite' company

Never anywhere else in cotton states in which I lived.

Lewiston, Idaho, needs a place at the stinky table. Besides having a paper mill, the city sits in a deep river gorge that doesn't allow the smell to blow away.

My parents lived in Liberal, Kansas, for a couple of years. There were several beef packing plants nearby. It’s the only city one been to where people often walk outside into the stench and declare, “They must be burning blood today!”

In NoCal, Gilroy is the Garlic Capital of the World. There is also Merced, which used to have ketchup, don't know if it still does. And, driving up the 5, you always know when you've reached Harris Ranch.

The garlic being processed in the early morning smells good. Hand to God. 10 minutes up the road in Morgan Hill where they grow mushrooms …

Tarrant, Ala., may be the worst I’ve smelled in the non-agricultural division. Most of the coal, iron and steel industry has pulled out of metro Birmingham, but there sits ABC Coke, with open flame shooting out of the stacks into the night sky and the most acrid smell imaginable. You can practically feel the brain tumor forming as you drive by.

It’s not a tumor!!!

Surprised New Jersey, say the NJ Turnpike right around exit 13, hasn't gotten any love yet.
