In a Houdini-like act that has amazed astronomers, one of Uranus's 13 rings has vanished and been replaced by another one thousands of kilometres away.

The giant blue planet is currently in a rare alignment that shows the dark side of its rings, revealing that they are not nearly as stable as expected.

"There is a ring that wasn't there 20 years ago and there is an old ring that is gone," says Mark Showalter, of the SETI Institute in California and co-author of a report in the journal Science detailing the change.
