My daughter-in-law had a link to this on her Twitter feed, she had some interest in it as a new mother. I read it and was like, "wow." I just can't imagine. Curious if others feel the same way.

My mother-in-law was a bit of a pain, never a fan of me because I took away her daughter. She never did anything like this (and wouldn't) but every time there was an issue of any sort between us, her daughter ALWAYS took her side. Always.

Taking the baby and leaving a note "sleeping at gam gams"... that is so ****ing outrageous, I can't even begin to think it through.

Divorce that ****ing family. The husband, the baby stealer MIL.

I couldn't imagine doing that to new parents without telling them.

My first thought was divorce seemed a little extreme but it really isn't. If he's defending his mom in this situation, she needs to ditch the whole scene.

That is unbelievable.
Divorce seems more than a little extreme, though.

I know she sent a text, but would it have been so hard for the grandmother to write a note and leave it in the baby's crib, saying that the baby was at her house?

I don't know if divorce is called for at this time, but she, and the family, need major counseling.

1) If she changes her mind and decides to return to the house, the next action is not to reclaim the spare key; it is to change the locks.
2) Install a home security system.
3) Ultimatum: The spineless husband gets to pick one: wife and daughter or his selfish, insane mom.

Why?

She'll never again trust her mother-in-law who lives four blocks away.

Her husband clearly does not see the problem with his mom, which means she won't be able to trust him.

Exactly.

You can deal with a crazy Mother in Law. (Moving 1500 miles away works wonders.) It's the worthless husband who won't stand up to the Mother in Law who is the real problem.

The entire story is hard to believe, but the idea that husband is siding with the mother seems very unlikely to me.
I am naturally suspicious of one-sided accounts re: family disputes.
The wife says she 'hates' the MIL and the husband does not share her sense of 'urgency.'
That sounds, as an outsider, as if the husband is trying to mitigate the situation, which is not the same as taking the mother's side.
He may well be extremely angry at his mother but does not hate her.
Making his mother apologize and taking back her key is an unreasonable response?

Woah woah woah.... **** the note in the crib.

On what earth should a mother in law be going into their home, unannounced, and going into the baby's room? NEVER. It is such a breach of the couple's space, it is unforgiveable.

GET THE **** OUT, GAM-GAM. WE'LL CALL YOU WHEN WE WANT YOU.

I think you are angry-twitter-mobbing your responses without considering there are two wronged parties here, the husband and the wife.
The offender is the husband's mother. He should be extremely angry at his mother, and justifiably so, but does that mean he should now hate his own mother?

I don't read that she expects the husband to hate his mom. She hates the MIL and hates the husband for being a *****.

btw, the restraining order is out of bounds, and stupid. If she were to move back in, change the locks and tell Gam-Gam that she in not welcome in the home unless she was invited.

New mother has every right to be extremely angry. Furious.
But it is great that she is getting some counseling, which will hopefully help her.

Dr. Phil has the hardest erection he's had in years.
Got to get these people on the show. Yesterday!!!!

MIL was in the wrong, but new momma is over-reacting.
I feel bad for the husband.
And the child.

Damn, i'd watch that.

I am a sucker for advice columns. I remember reading Dear Abby in the fourth grade. I now read Ask Amy. Love practically every column.
