The everything karaoke thread

Tenacious D, Dio and The Darkness are fun if you've got the range.

If there was karaoke rehab, I'd have been committed by my true friends a year ago. Thank goodness my new location has trivia nights instead of karaoke.

Last Saturday, this guy came up to me and goes, "you HAVE to do 'Rehab'."

A few weeks prior to that, my FATHER suggested I sing "Rehab" at karaoke.

Guess what song I'm trying this week if I go to karaoke?

If you go, go, go.

A buddy of mine swore that he would never sing karaoke. So on his 21st birthday when he was a couple hours into this partying, we signed him up to "I believe in a thing called love" by the Darkness. It was so god-awful bad that it was great.

Whenever I see or hear someone talk about The Darnkness, I think about the Dropkick Murphys' "Wicked Sensitive Crew."

"In Sydney, they misunderstood us
They called us thugs and mean-spirited types
Yeah we might not be Swedish
And we sure ain't vegan
But do thugs have posters on their bedroom wall of the dude
from the Darkness in a creepy meat suit zippered so low you
can practically see his ...

... Ugh. That's gross."

This is for all of us who don't have the voices or the requisite youth to try out for American Idol. :D

I bring a tambourine with me to karaoke (the thing used to light up but the batteries died on it).

Anyway, I started the night with a rendition of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "I Need To Know." Complete with the tambourine. And yes, I played it during the bridge and the third chorus. And when one of my friends sang Miranda Lambert's "Kerosene."

When my dad comes to town in a few weeks, he and I will be singing this...

I have four different versions of Karoke Revoultion for the PS2, and I will have Rock Band when I get my check from WoF.

This was the first time in about three weeks that I went to karaoke. The karaoke venue I go to had bands performing on Saturday night (my night to karaoke), thus meaning that I wouldn't go to sing. But this Saturday saw karaoke back, so back I went.

This thread inspired me to put in The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" for the first time in at least a couple of years. I remembered the first time I sang it and shocked myself with the feeling that the spirit of the late George Harrison decided to pay a visit.

Anyway, when I used to sing the song regularly, I'd decided to incorporate a "lost" verse that went in place of the repeat of the first verse:

"I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps
As I'm standing here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps."

I went into singing the song with the idea of using that verse because the previous time I sang it those years ago, a woman joined me on stage and sang along. I didn't want to throw her off, so I sang it the way everyone knows it.

However, when that verse came up, I didn't sing the "lost" verse. Though I did the closing coda that was part of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame induction of George Harrison, sans Prince and his killer guitar solo.

Found out just how difficult Journey's Don't Stop Believin is last week. Me and a couple buds absolutely ****ed up that song.

There's a reason I basically avoid the song like the plague. That, and I'd need to be completely Stanified to touch Steve Perry's range.

I was talking to a guy who is a huge Led Zeppelin fan Saturday night. I mentioned that my Chick I'd Switch For (I did NOT use that name Flash, call me a chicken **** if you want :P) also sang their song "Rock And Roll." He expressed surprise and I mentioned to him that I use her version as my template when I sing it.

So, I sang it last night ala La Nicks. Complete with tambourine, complete with her repeat of the first verse toward the end. He came up to me and said, "that was awesome."

I felt especially good because someone complimented my version of one of his favorite band's songs.

Some folks who know me know that I occasionally sing a humorous duet with one of my straight guy friends at karaoke.

Many months ago, he came up and proposed that we sing "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher. This was a few weeks after he'd answered a MySpace survey that let me know that he knew I was gay. I immediately saw the irony of our even doing the song, let alone that he was the one who proposed singing it.

So one night, we sang the song. Even though he's a good bit taller than I am, I was singing the Cher parts. After we got done and we did a guy hug, he said, "we are so doing that again." And we have. Several times. However, there was one line we didn't cross. When Sonny sings the line "so put your little hand in mine" we haven't done so.

We sang the song again last night. I have photos that I'll post on MySpace. Only last night, as he was beginning to sing that line, he put his hand out. Before I knew it, we had broken that barrier and we were actually holding hands on stage. That definitely ratcheted up the comedy factor in my opinion.

I used to bartend at a place that had karaoke. It was possibly the worst singing I've ever heard. And it was the same shiftless loser bunch fo freaks every week singing the same damn songs.

Just terrible. I did turn it into a good column however.

Although I do have a story of horrendous singing on myself. We went out one New Year's Eve and drink A LOT of beer. Well, we ended up at this bar that had karaoke, and I sang Cum on Feel the Noize. Well, sing may be a bit of an overstatement. Screamed it at the top of my lungs is more like it. I actually cleared a bar I was so loud.

I didn't even tip the lady, just gave her a kiss on the cheek as my buddies drug me out of the bar. Good times.
