The cut count for '08

Do the old timers remember when they used to change the number on the golden arches (before saying billions and billions served)? That's what the industry has become: fast-food tripe (thanks to the management of today). It's like they want to see the guy go out with the step-stool and long pole to change the number from 2,000 sent packing to 3,000 sent packing. And yes, the MCall saga is especially distressing.

Allentown, Pa. 35-40 (we'll use 40 since 35 is such a low number to such lame execs)

Atlanta, Ga. 58 (or 100 if you count those they never replaced)

That's 323 just on page 1 of this board. What's the total for this year so far? How does it compare to other years?

That said, 22,000 California state employees just lost their jobs today, too. And 51,000 people across the nation lost their jobs in July.

Lot of cuts being made everywhere, in every industry.

Just from the month of July, you'd have to add cuts from four major papers in Florida (Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando) and a fifth on the way in a matter of a couple weeks (Palm Beach). I know we all regularly hear about this corporation or that industry losing hundreds or thousands of jobs and we're certainly just part of the downpour, but that doesn't make it less painful or make it less amazing how quickly the economy has gone down the crapper. Just so sad.

Trenton Times is only closing if they don't get the 25 buyouts newspaper wide (all departments, not just newsroom).
They're not closing. They'll easily get that amount.

Thanks. Whether or not the Ledger gets its 200 buyouts AND the mailers and truckers unions to agree to new contracts to prevent the sale of both papers is another story that I don't have any info on.
