The Old Gray Lady is up to another curious thing.

New York Times Culture Desk Shake-Up: Critics Margaret Lyons, Jon Pareles, Jesse Green, Zach Woolfe Reassigned to ‘New Roles’

The quartet of Times critics — television critic Margaret Lyons, music critic Jon Pareles, theater critic Jesse Green and classical music critic Zach Woolfe — will "be taking on new roles, and we will be conducting a search for critics on their beats in the weeks to come," New York Times culture editor Sia Michel wrote in a memo to staffers on Tuesday afternoon.

I’m sure they have plenty of people in mind to be the new critics.

Pareles had a great run in that role.

Criticism is just about dead anyhow. Grades get more inflated than Harvard these days.

Why I migrated to the culture desk

Based on nothing but my prejudices: “Television critic” could be handled by a lot of general assignment reporters. Music and theater criticism are more specialized. Classical music is niche. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

My bias is that if you’ve been the pop critic since 1988 someone else probably does need a turn at bat. But the others hadn’t been entrenched (one started in 2022!) and swapping them all out at once speaks to something besides dissatisfaction with work product.
