I'm watching Children of Men again, and I'll be damned if this isn't the best 5 minutes of any movie I've ever seen...

"Saving Private Ryan" has a pretty strong start....
The opening shot of "A Clockwork Orange" pulls me in too.

There's nothing the magnitude of Saving Private Ryan.

Raising Arizona's first few minutes are pretty damn outstanding, as well.

"As far back as I remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster."

also

"We were just outside of Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold."

Fight Club...

Between the opening scene and possibly the coolest opening credits ever, I was completely hooked...

Kind of a crappy movie (OK, a crappy movie), but Cliffhanger gives you chills right away.

There Will Be Blood can make an argument for it, I think. Persona's in there. Blood of a Poet.

My personal favorite though, is George Washington. If you've ever seen it, you know that the first five minutes are fairly extraordinary, and the movie, while wonderful, never quite lives up to it.

Doc's right.

The beginning of Goodfellas, through to the long tracking shot, is perfection.

You have to be able to get past the start of SPR to be able to watch the whole movie. I can't do it.

The Good Doctor,

See, I hated The Departed, and just about everything in it, but the start wasn't bad. Although I'm still not sure what the racial troubles in Boston have to do with the movie.

The last couple Best Picture winners have let me a little wanting.
