Yep, very true indeed! So glad I was able to catch Freddie Mercury fronting Queen the last time they were on tour a couple years back.

The Two Escobars and Dupree were easily the best. There have been several other very, very good ones. This one fell flat for me. And I think it was definitely stated that the woman was Nelson George's sister. I doubt the young girl who is in her 20s now is real real real real real rich, either.

I didn't see the whole thing (switched over to The Walking Dead because I just couldn't wait anymore).

The early part of the AIDS epidemic were hard to watch. When they showed rednecks screaming at Ryan White, I cried. Same when they showed the early victims of AIDS, especially the one man who was on the verge of death and looked like a skeleton being helped to stand. And of course the little girl -- forget it. Empty box of tissues.


The scenes that got me with Magic were a little simpler. His decision to call people individually, the players being pulled out of practice, his brother taking time off work to deal with the comments.

I thought that having Magic narrate this made it work. If you had some booming announcer voice-over (I know Charlton Heston and John Facenda are dead, but those are the people who come to mind), some of the authenticity would be lost.

I guess the more I think about it, it is pretty amazing that there are only a handful of athletes who we know of, who have gotten HIV/AIDS.

What about musicians, as well?

What, a handful that contracted AIDs ... Freddie Mercury is the only one I can recall off the top of my head.

Was talking about this show with a friend tonight (someone who is not in the journalism business). He said he thought there was a big hole in this story - what about all the women Magic Johnson was with? Did he inform all of them? How many of them contracted HIV? How many died? How many did he have to pay off - and how much? I thought it was an interesting question and I guess in a way showed me how one-sided that documentary just might have been. (And I liked it for the most part, although thought it they took out all the Magic voiceovers it would have played just as well, if not better.)

Back then, almost everyone felt it was a death sentence for Magic. It wasn't which truly makes this story so interesting.

I would think a lot of them were "informed" by the announcement.

Yes, because the last two decades have been so full of exposes, substantial rumors, and tabloid reports from Magic's former lovers/drug addicts/tainted blood transfusion victims.

It is so shameful for you, and the "journalists" from 20 years ago, to act like you're being "REPORTERS!!!!!!!" when you say, "Duh . . um . . .duh . . .how do we KNOW he got it from heterosexual ACTIVITY!!!!! DOPEY-DOPE! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Who cares? He got HIV. Doesn't matter how, or where. The message of "Protect yourself and don't be reckless" resonates.

Why do you think it's worthwhile to question how? Are you saying "Hey! Maybe we can again get people to think it's restricted to the homosexual/drug addict community!!!!!!"
