But you know there are plenty of people who will shell it out. And that's who would buy $300 in gear to be a volunteer.

I was kind of excited. I could see LACC from my Century City office.

Then I put it together. I quit working there because of the commute. Why would I want to pay $300 to commute for a week through LA traffic?

The volunteer racket is something else. You're gonna shell out well over $100 at any PGA Tour event for the "free" gear. Maybe you get fed during the week and a round at the course later for free or at a discount, or maybe you'll get nothing and like it.

During L.A. Opens at Riviera, I continually ran into people I knew who were volunteers. I never asked them if there was any reward. I did note that you could never wear the clothes again to do anything except volunteer at a golf event.

I got an Olympic front page t shirt at the AJC the day Atlanta was chosen, and flipped another for double what I paid before I got out of the lobby.
