That's what I was wondering when I read the story. I hate when reporters do that. Don't leave me hanging like that.

But I did find out twice that Bill Smith has been with the Twins for 22 years.

He did so with a series of successful trades, starting with the Chuck Knoblauch trade to the Yankees in 1998 that brought them shortstop in Cristian Guzman and lefthander Eric Milton - both of whom were named All-Stars. Milton even pitched a no-hitter.

More recently, Ryan dealt controversial catcher A.J. Pierzynski in 2003 to the Giants for closer Joe Nathan, lefthander Francisco Liriano and righthander Boof Bonser - one of the more lopsided deals in recent baseball history.

Not necessarily. The Twins start their last homestand on Friday. It's the chance for a big farewell.

The pending free agent situation might have the greatest link -- especially after the crop of free agents brought in the past two seasons.

IMHO: Ryan's last offer to Torii (45 million?) was his last and best under Pohlad's terms. When Torii shot that down, there wasn't much point.

Ryan's saying it ain't on him. And after how many years laboring with the old man's ridiculous budget, I don't blame him.
