Got the bad news, my position was eliminated in a restructuring. Ran my pub's web editorial operations since late 1999. Management is folding five weeklies into one, and they're keeping another web editor who hired on a few months before me. We're probably one of the smaller Guild shops, but we got two weeks' pay for each year, plus I stay on through the transition until Feb. 27, so it could have been much worse.

Anyone need a stringer in metro NY-NJ?

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Sorry man, hope things work out quickly for you.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Sorry, GM. Best of luck. Hope you land on both feet.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

That sucks to hear.

It's always surprising to me when web folks get laid off, since that is supposed to be the future.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Sorry, goal. I was hoping something would have changed. I'm glad you at least get to stay on and get a LITTLE bit of severance.

That's the perception. The truth is, the technology to post to the web is as simple as filling out a form online. There won't be any print-only or web-only editors anymore.

Anyway, I found out that part of my salary several years ago had been allocated to one of the pubs being closed down, so that was that.

I guess I better tell my girlfriend, who is a web editor, to continue to improve on her reporting and writing skills.

Good luck in the future.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Ugh. This is becoming far too common around here. Best of luck to you, goalmouth.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

****...

I've lived it and it never gets easier to read about it happening to someone else.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Goalmouth, I'm sorry to hear this. It's awful and there's nothing good that comes out of these situations, no matter how much we want to think otherwise.

Take care ... stay strong ...

Re: Ten years (and) gone

File for unemployment ASAP and let THEM tell YOU how soon you are or aren't eligible for benefits. Don't wait until the severance period runs out to file. And good luck.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

I've already PMed you on this, but want to add my voice to the parade of condolences.

I hate doing this, hate reading about it and hate the fact I've had to do it way too damn much lately, but it's not right not to express sympathy for a good person losing their job here.

Here's some good karma going your way.

That's what scares me. That's why I am learning as much flash, HTML and CSS as possible.

Re: Ten years (and) gone

Ugh. Sorry to hear, gm, and I'll add my best wishes to everyone else's.

Sorry, Goalmouth. Good luck.
