Talk about your unfortunate typos ...

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Had the country club typo under my watch, in reference to the publisher's club in a rewrite...

Not good. I wasn't working that night, as I recall, but I kept my job, as did the stringer who made the mistake and the editors working that night.

The worst one of all time ran in the Annapolis Capital a few years ago when an aptly named writer (Joe Gross) hit the "n" key instead of the "b" when writing that a Navy basketball player planned to move on to bigger and better things. What made this gaffe even more spectacular is that it ran on the MKL holiday.

It's an afternoon paper and people from the newsroom were rounded up to go out and physically pull papers out of as many street boxes as possible while a corrected version was being replated. A 1A apology ran the next day.

This is a true story. If you have any doubts, call up to The Capital and talk to Gerry or Bill, or talk to Scott in the Navy SID office.

In college, we had one about a girl "who went fisting" on a sunny day.

She was fishing.

I think it's still hanging in the newsroom somewhere ...

EDIT: It was in a cutline ... so it kind of stood out.

If you're asking "Did this make it to print?", then in my case, yes. No one caught it until the next day.

I used to have a mental typo where I would type "red****" freshman every time, though I always caught it and changed it immediately ...
Caught this in a college baseball roundup once:

"Fisher led Southwest Who Cares State with two ****s."

Glad that didn't make it to print.

Saw this in an ad for a nightclub not too long ago, referring to the dress code: "Collared ****s required."

I used to do that one too for some weird reason

I still think this one at my community college rag was classic:

"Below is the biological information about the candidates..."

I'm just glad I never had to write about the Mighty Dicks Mighty ****s Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Had a colleague accidentally misspell a girl's last name of Hunt with a C.

A friend once worked in HS radio (a bastion for gaffes). He said one of his fellow student newsreaders came across a story about Iran and discussed those "Sh*tty Muslims" (advisor, off-air, pulls the kid aside, and says, "Just for your information, it's Shee-eyet."

Aw, dammit, dammit, dammit! I missed that completely. I read what I expected it to say instead of what was there.

A little word play, man. PUBIC, not public.

Scrappy became crappy when a typist (yes before email) forgot the s in a quote.

Coach was a great guy about it, because it was a "scrappy" team he was playing that week.

In the shadows of military base Fort Rucker, our news desker had a rather unfortunate typo.

Best part was the the mistake ran on a Saturday, but the apology/correction on a Sunday, so many people sat around saying, "Why did they apologize for misspelling Fort Rucker? What did they type? Did they type...Oh!"

Seeing the lightbulb click on one friend was pretty funny. We're all still employed.

A year or two ago, an area high school put a notice in our sports briefs looking for clock operator for basketball games, only I left out the "l" in clock. Of course, spell check didn't pick it up and I read right over it -- as did EVERYONE else at the paper.
We're a twice-a-week paper and the typo ran for a few issues until someone finally noticed.

Almost forgot one. Our former prep guy once covered a high school game that a lightning storm caused to have a "late lickoff."

One our Catholic school field hockey teams was coached by a nun several years ago. Tough to contain myself on a call-in once when she said the match went to a strokeoff.

Not me, but a colleague once quoted a losing coach as saying his team didn't have enough fingers to plug all the holes in the dyke. I swear it's not me, swear it. But I giggled a lot.

Don't worry, Apeman. I missed it, too.

The city neighborhood planner who writes a column that requires extensive proofing/rewriting for my community news magazine included a bit about a female college student serving as an intern with the city's planning department. He wrote that her duties include "working with the pubic."

Nothing was said by my editors about pubic (an indication of how little they read my section?), but one sweet person who works at City Hall called me to say the neighborhood planner was embarrassed by it. When I looked at the column he emailed, he had written pubic.

And there was the time a local community college sent out a news release about an event, saying it was "open to the pubic."
