When Tim's switched to doing more central baking, it meant the stores I used to go to no longer had fresh donuts. They also ****ed with my once-favourite donut, the venerable walnut crunch, by adding a glaze on it and basically changing the recipe as well. Consequently, I don't eat donuts anymore.

That said, it was always a guilty pleasure to stop at the Krispy Kreme in Calgary on the way home once or twice a year. My wife will not be pleased with this news.

Was always? It was only here for four years.

I prefer cake donuts to fried lard ones. Not surprising that I've hated my few Krispy Kreme experiences. I much prefer Dunkin Donuts.

I've hit Dunkin' Donuts a couple of times on my trips south of the border. Very good Tims substitute, both for coffee and double chocolate donuts.

Krappy Kreme. It's like eating deep fried lard.

Krispy Kremes are sinfully good. Can't deny, though, that their lack of stores 'round here has been a good thing for my arteries.

All kidding aside, I think it's probably a cultural thing. Canadians have been raised on the "cake" style of doughnuts.

Anyway, the whole marketing excursion into Canada was just wrong. It just made me think of Pet Rocks and Beanie Babies.

There's no doubt KK miscalculated on both sides of the border. They're flopping everywhere.

They're a perfect rest stop pick-me-up. But people's breakfast and/or coffee habits are too entrenched to make a dent with a real store...especially down here, where Dunkin is ubitiqueous (sp).

Here in the heart of Dunks country, both Tim's and KK have tried and both failed miserably. The only Tim's I knew of was 5 minutes from my house (very suburban location) and was done in less than a year.
KK tried in more commercial areas, but didn't fare much better. One in Dedham is still vacant while the one in Medford became a Kelly's Roast Beef.

mmm, kelly's.  way too overpriced now -- was much better when they were limited to just the revere beach store -- but always a necessary stop when i'm on the beach. (the medford kelly's is next to pizzeria regina.....talk about artery overload, that duo makes kk look like a picnic by comparison.)

You couldn't be more wrong about anything. Leaving work at 2 a.m., seeing the magical KK sign (it's like the batman signal for sportswriters) and biting into a warm, sticky doughnut with the chocolate icing melting in your mouth. . .man, I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

terrier, tim's u.s. stores are bleeding cash. i think wendy's has put the chain up for sale/sold it. their locations in my neck of the woods get very, very little business, but the franchisee still keeps 'em open. they're neck and neck with honey dew, imo.

kk's are good when right off the conveyor. otherwise, not so much.

There are Tim Horton's in the U.S.??? Where?? Not where I live, sadly, or perhaps fortunately, given the potential impact on my waistline.
I thought Tim's was something you selfish Canuckistanis kept for yourselves, along with curling and Ed Willes.

according to tim's web site (www.timhortons.com), they have stores in connecticut, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, michigan, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island and west virginia.

Believe the only PA stores are in Erie. They're all over western New York, as one might expect, including one about 25 minutes from me. Mmmm... Timbits...

Think there's one Krispy Kreme store left in Buffalo, down by the Galleria Mall. They didn't have a chance against Tim's.
