So W is expected to announce a "surge" in troops in Iraq this week.

My question is that since this is obviously a word the White House is floating to make an increase in troops sound as good as possible, why are media outlets using this word at all?

Why not say that Bush is expected to increase the troop level in Iraq by 20,000.

I know why the White House wants to use the word. It sounds strong, it sounds temporary. But why does the media buy into this crap so often?

It's like the whole strategy over there is being made up on the fly. Like they still haven't thought ahead to even what tomorrow may bring.

The kind of "surge" Bush doesn't want you talking about:

Could you say that post padding causes a surge in one's post count?

I was thinking the same thing. Remember the commercials...."SUUUURRRRRRGGE!" and then a mad rush for the Surge can that looked like an XFL coin flip?

According to CNN this morning, surge is no longer the preferred word. The preferred word is now a plusup. The anchor asked the reporter if he'd looked that up to see if it was an actual word. I thought that was a pretty good dig at this administration.

We're at war with Terror. We've always been at war with Terror.

If they send the 10th Mountain Div it will be the "Surge of The Light Brigade"

Half a league, half a league, half a league onward.

Nice ref, boom...

If they send the 10th Mountain Div, it would be the "Surge of The Light Division."

Each division is broken down into four brigades.

PS: Good joke, though

Fred Kagan is one of the pony-seeking intellectuals behind the surge.
Here's one of his suggestions:

"The president must request a substantial increase in ground forces end strength. This increase is vital to sustaining the morale of the combat forces by ensuring that relief is on the way. The president must issue a personal call for young Americans to volunteer to fight in the decisive conflict of this generation."

Please, Fredo, pretty please, do this, so we can all talk about a) the National Guard again, and b) the current location of every Bush child of age. Please do this. Please.

Volunteer to fight? I thought we were training Iraqis to fend for themselves,

Of course, the "surge" is causing complications elsewhere.
