SU media director accused of filming athletes

Former SU media director charged with unlawful surveillance.
DA says more than a 100 athletes filmed.

The investigation into Roger Springfield began as a result of another employee at Syracuse University noticing on Dec. 6 an extended period of locker room footage on the video from the Oct. 27 football game against South Florida in Tampa, Fla., Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.
That employee, who Fitzpatrick did not identify during a news conference this morning, noticed the footage was “clearly inappropriate” and notified a supervisor.
On Dec. 8, the Syracuse University public safety office notified the Syracuse police department and DA’s office.
On Dec. 11, City Judge Stephen Dougherty issued a search warrant for Springfield’s home on Valerie Circle and for his office and the media room at Manley Field House.
That search warrant was executed on Dec. 12 and Springfield came to the police station to be questioned by detectives.
SU suspended him that day and fired him the following day.
