This is a fascinating story. A couple in Canada is determined to raise their baby, Storm, as genderless until he/she commits to one gender or another, genitalia be damned. A few select people know of Storm's sex, but they have been asked to keep this information a secret. Horrible social experiment or a sign of progress? Or none of our business?

This was the front page story on last Saturday's Toronto Star. Most reaction has been decidedly negative. Weird to make your child a sociology experiment .

Not this case obviously, but it sounds very familiar and I'm sure I remember it from here.

I can't remember what country the family was from. Somewhere in Europe maybe.

Humans are, by definition, a specific gender. 'Oh, that's a penis, but it doesn't DEFINE you.' Yes dear, it does. It makes you a male. You can be a male who likes pink and does ballet dances in a Little Mermaid costume, but you're still a male.

Would it be so bad to just raise kids with some respect for other people and in a loving home where they would feel comfortable breaking from traditional sex roles if they felt that was part of their personalities?

For a moment, I thought maybe this child was intersexed, in which case it seemed to be appropriate. I've seen a couple of documentaries on people who were raised one sex even but it turned out they were the opposite.

This clearly is not that and that makes these parents idiots.

I dunno. I think Storm would be a boy's' name. Stormy (or maybe "Stormi") would be a girl's name. I wouldn't be surprised if people hear the name and assume it's a boy.

I think it was Freddie Prinze who had a routine about girls' names like that: Misty, Stormi, Windy.
