Obviously this goes beyond sports journalism, but as much as "twitter" and "social media" have been scorned and blamed for the demise of journalism, I realized today that the real culprit is the hashtag. Yes, the hashtag. Say something A happens and gets a million re-tweets and likes, well, you are probably going to throw together something "B" that goes along the same lines so you can you the hashtag "A-Too."
Anyone think that kicker story on Urban Meyer would have seen the light of day with out Meyer being a hot topic on twitter? Or the latest "pending Trump indictment?" - it's follow the pack journalism, latch on to a hot topic with something factual or not, newsworthy or not, but as long as you can drop the same hashtag - you're good.
