The Wilton Villager and The Stamford Times have an immediate opening for a part-time reporter on its sports team. The successful candidate will cover all things sports at three Stamford high schools and be expected to contribute three to four stories per week. This is a stipend stringer position. Afternoon availability is necessary. Some weekend work will be expected. Photography skills are a plus. The Wilton Villager and The Stamford Times are two vibrant weekly newspapers with a combined circulation of more than 30,000 in the competitive market of Fairfield County, Connecticut. The Hour is owned by a charitable trust, but it ain't the St. Pete Times or even the New London Day, it is a fairly typical small-town daily that used to be one of the ugliest, most amateurish papers I'd ever seen but had a significant upgrade over the past 10 years under an editor who left a few years ago. Anyway, typical small daily, you could do worse. I don't know anything about these weeklies owned by The Hour.

Two things to think about. With Gannett buying Stamford and Greenwich, contiguous to its large suburban in Westchester County, N.Y., there is the possibility of some turf battles here. Also, those who think the future of newspapers lies in charitable trusts, well, they need to examine the fact that not all charitable trusts are as charitable with news coverage as you might expect. (On the other hand, would The Hour still be alive without the charitable trust, seeing as it is one of four dailies in Fairfield County?)

How could anyone answer that? We don't know your skill level or what your prospects are. You do the best you can for yourself, like the rest of us do. If you think you can do better, you pass on it. If you think it's possibly a good match, you pursue.

Having lived not too far from that area, just don't expect to live in Wilton or Stamford unless you live in a pup tent in someone's back yard and subsist on pork and beans, on what they'll pay you.
