The Boone News-Republican, a weekly newspaper in central Iowa, is looking for a talented, energetic team player to be its next sports writer.
Your focus will be covering high school sports for three area high schools with emphasis on Boone High School athletics.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to tell stories beyond game coverage. We are looking for someone who can tell the stories of the players and coaches that make up the athletic programs, and the inner workings of those programs. The right person will develop compelling features about players who find success in simply making the team, and the challenges they overcame just to be there. Oftentimes, the best stories aren't about the leading scorer. We tell the stories that matter to our readers and that have impact in our community.
Candidates should have experience shooting photos and video, and have knowledge of InDesign. Use of social media should be second nature.
We are a company that is leading the way in the digital revolution, taking a daily, digital-first approach, in our story telling, and teasing readers to our weekly product.
If successful, the candidate will become part of a talented team of GateHouse sports writers in central Iowa, and may on occasion be asked to share their talents with one of our other GateHouse papers in the region.
Boone is a thriving community just 45 minutes north of Des Moines, and only minutes from Ames and Iowa State University.
Some real-world experience is preferred, but talented new grads are encouraged to apply.
