The Helena Independent-Record, a 10,000 circulation daily in an outdoor-recreation paradise, is seeking a sports reporter to be part of a three-person staff dedicated to covering a diverse market. Our new hire also will collaborate with a team of 18 staffers statewide who are building an innovative and robust new sports website (406mtsports.com).
We’re looking for someone who can unearth nuggets of compelling content for both a loyal print readership and an increasingly savvy digital audience in Montana’s vibrant capital city. The NAIA’s Carroll College will be the primary focus of our new reporter’s coverage, but our reach includes two high schools in Helena and two small rural communities where sports are king. In addition, Lewis & Clark County is flush with people who are active year-round.
Duties include Carroll feature/game coverage plus additional features and regular page-trafficking shifts, depending on the season. We emphasize content that will be well read not only in the Helena area but across Montana. Periodic coverage of events of statewide importance for 406mtsports.com papers in Billings, Missoula, Butte and Hamilton also comes with the job.
Social and digital media skills are essential, and the ability to take photos/video is a big plus.
Helena is a growing city that also serves as a destination for people who appreciate the wealth of outdoor activities in the valley and surrounding mountains.
