Description:

The Virgin Islands Daily News, a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper covering the U.S. Virgin Islands, seeks an experienced editor and sports specialist to lead and coordinate its local sports coverage and production of the daily sports section.

The successful candidate must have enthusiasm and stamina for handling the sports section copy editing and page design, handling some reporting and rewrites, managing and developing photo freelancers and reporting stringers and working with the executive editor and deputy executive editor to collaborate on coverage plans and improvements to the section.

Local sports here includes world-class sailing, sportfishing and the USVI Olympic team, local horseracing and an annual NCAA basketball tournament every fall, but the vast majority of sports journalism here is coverage of prep and community leagues. The successful candidate must find that appealing and rewarding.

Experience in copy editing and page design is essential. Knowledge of sports fundamentals (in football, baseball and basketball) to the extent of being able to report and write or rewrite game stories and edit stats boxes also is required. The Daily News’ newsroom uses InDesign and InCopy managed through a Hermes database system, and experience with those systems will count in an applicant’s favor.

Practicing journalism in this locale is uniquely complicated and requires both sensitivity and confidence. This is not a job for raw beginners. You MUST have hands-on experience working on a daily news deadline. Please be aware that to succeed here, you need to have the personality and soul to adapt to both the joys and the difficulties of a racially, culturally and economically diverse environment. Please research the U.S. Virgin Islands and our newspaper BEFORE applying. Our islands are a paradise for journalists, but this is a challenging place to live and work.

If you are interested and prepared, then e-mail a cover letter, resume and the required clips to Executive Editor Gerry Yandel at [email protected].

The Virgin Islands Daily News is an equal opportunity employer committed to a substance abuse-free workplace.

Owned by the Times-Shamrock chain in Scranton.
Is that a good thing, bad thing, or were you merely stating a fact?

It could be bad. IIRC, the chain is or was looking to dump everything outside of Northeast Pennsylvania.
