I used to live a block from the Jefferson Davis statue. He faces east. Ashe either faces east or south, I want to say south. Stuart and Stonewall face north because they died in the war; Lee faces south because he survived.

Whoever takes this job will, however, have to get used to living in the capital of the confedracy. They have an avenue there with gigantic statues of all the confederate generals. A lot of the houses on that street, which goes for miles, have confederate flags drapped out of the windows. I think all of the generals are carved out of marble and facing east. Way down at the end of the street - far past the last general - facing west, life-sized and made of copper is a statue of Arthur Ashe. I guess Richmond is great besides this part.

Here we go.
Richmond's a nice city, lack of diversity aside (the city is about 73 percent white).

Epodunk says the city is 10th in the nation in percentage of black residents, 57 percent:

Richmond is great. The paper is a cash cow. The security is there. This is a veteran's opening. Newcomers need not applyl The RTD is the state newspaperl. It is a winner.

Who would they look for in this job? besides internal people, what would a paper like this want? An up-n-commer from the Post, Times, Trib? Or a latteral move assistant from some place like Norfolk, Charlotte, Raleigh, Fresno, Sac?

One guy who has been brought in is from the northeast where he is an assistant
SE. He's got a fighter's chance but I don't see it happening. Richmond has always honored loyalty and tht's one reason why Berniger succeeded Millsaps who succeeded another longtime editor.
While the paper is undergoing a transformation, I know for a fact there are several good in house people who would and could do an outstanding job as SE.

As for the internal candidates, I'd love to hear more about them. They seem to have one "associate" sports editor and two assistants. Isn't the associate the No. 2 person? And isn't this particular associate sports editor female? They've known the sports editor was retiring for months. Wouldn't they have given her the job already if she was going to get it?

Plenty of jobs that are posted are actually filled, but then, you can't get a job if you don't apply, right?

I never have and never will waste people's time encouraging them to apply for a job they have no chance of getting.

The point is, there's no way to know for sure if they have someone lined up or not, so you're going to have to apply either way if you're trying to find a new job.

Richmond has a fairly new EE, one who doesn't know all of the people on the sports staff who worked under Jack. I think that's part of the reason why the job hasn't been filled. And on the topic of the female ASE, I haven't heard her name mentioned in reference to this job.

That new EE at Richmond came from Newark and supposedly has someone from Newark in mind as one of his leading candidates, someone who reportedly already has paid a visit to Richmond.

What difference does it make if she is a woman? If they feel she is qualified, she'll get the gig. As for the person who came and interviewed, I'd be very surprised for many reaasons if he gets the gig or accepts it.

As the Mercury-News pointed out recently, there aren't a lot of female sports editors at big papers. San Jose wasted no time promoting a woman when it had the opportunity, and wasted even less time patting itself on the back for doing so.

And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. I'm a strong proponent of diversity in the workplace and wish we had more of it in my department.
