Join a team of talented journalists as sports editor/paginator at the Del Norte Triplicate in Crescent City, California, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean.
You'll cover local sports ranging from high school preps to recreation for all ages. You'll also scroll the wires and paginate the sports page and some of our news pages. Experience with InDesign is preferred, and understanding of Adobe Photoshop would be a plus. Good reporting, writing and people skills are essential.
Del Norte High School is the only one in the county, and Warrior sports is the great community unifier. You'll cover varsity teams closely while dabbling in JV, middle schools and youth sports. As for recreation, well, just wait until you see our coastline, rivers and forests. Sometimes you'll be sinking your teeth into features; other times you'll be writing game stories and/or paginating pages on a tight deadline.
The job will most likely go to a sportswriter/paginator who already has writing and design clips to show from prior full-time newspaper work.
We're a 5,000-circulation newspaper that emphasizes crisp writing, smart reporting, innovative local coverage, teamwork and a nice mix of stories. We publish Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. You'll be mentored by an editor with 30 years' experience at papers big and small who has settled in this remote patch of paradise along California's most scenic and affordable coastline.
We are owned by Western Communications, an Oregon-based, family company that operates several newspapers in Oregon and Northern California. While the pay is what you'd expect for a paper our size, in economical Del Norte County some staffers have enjoyed ocean or river views from their residences. We’re a stable, employee-friendly company with good benefits and opportunities for career advancement. Any offer of employment is contingent on passing a drug test.
