The Orangeburg, S.C., Times and Democrat and TheTandD.com are looking for a passionate, hard-working individual to lead our award-winning sports staff.
As the sports editor for a seven-day daily located between Columbia and Charleston, you will direct a staff of one writer and two page designers in covering a region that provides plenty of challenges: 18 high schools and four colleges, including perennial MEAC football title contender South Carolina State University. You will work closely with the online news editor in Internet and mobile news aspects of the sports report.
This position is the definition of “working” editor in that it will be as much about bylines as budgets. Also, The T&D has developed a strong tradition of developing enterprise and color feature stories that drive readers to our products, and with that in mind, the ideal candidate would be someone with plenty of ideas and who is unafraid to try new things. In recent years, those ideas have included a popular website, thebulldogzone.com, dedicated to our S.C. State coverage, as well as an award-winning prep “slam dunk” competition known as “Slammin’ and Jammin’.”
We are hyper local and strong preps coverage – especially during football season – is a must. In past years, our region has been home to some of the finest prep football talent in the country with the likes of Da’Quan Bowers (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Alshon Jeffery (expected to be a high draft choice in 2012) and Ricky Sapp (New York Jets) playing here.
The ability to multitask and have fun doing it is a must. Shooting and editing photos (Photoshop) and designing sports pages (InDesign) are big pluses.
