those fries do kick ass... and if i remember correctly, this job was posted a year or two ago and offering less than $30k to start. it's about an hour outisde san jose, but it still ain't that cheap.

The cost of living is high in gilroy and i think that paper works people pretty hard. But if you don't screw up too badly maybe you can hook on in santa cruz, salinas or monterey.

How many people take a job at a stepping-stone newspaper like gilroy and buy a house, thinking they're going to stay there for a long time? Jeez. If you're renting in the Monterey Bay Area, you can find a small apartment or mother-in-law cottage or a room or whatever to occupy for something reasonable. I've done it.
Santa Cruz and Monterey are expensive, but there are smaller places like Corralitos, Prunedale, Watsonville, Seaside, Marina, Felton, etc., that are not so bad.
I worry about some of the people on this site.

newbie - 30K gets you no where fast in santa cruz. listing the price of a house is a bottom line of explaining how expensive any area is.
