JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Sports Editor

Description:
The Fremont Tribune is looking for a talented and ambitious sports editor to showcase local high school and college athletes on our multimedia platforms. Experience is preferred, but we are willing to promote the right sports reporter.

Our sports editor oversees our sports department, works with our freelance writers, and communicates with our sister papers. They report directly to the managing editor and coordinate game coverage for our daily newspaper.

There are five area high schools and a university in our coverage area. The ideal candidate for this position is a self-motivated, energetic sports fan with a knack for recapping live games, but can also see the stories that make our schools, teams and athletes stand out.

The full-time position includes writing and management responsibilities, oversight of daily page production, copy editing and photography, as well as working with feature pieces and special sections. The schedule includes mainly evening and some weekend hours.

Our daily newspaper publishes Tuesdays through Saturdays, reaching nearly 10,000 readers. The Fremont Tribune website is viewed by over 100,000 unique visitors each month.

A degree in journalism is preferred, but experience will be considered. Photography experience is a must.

A reliable vehicle, insurance and valid driver's license are required.

As part of Lee Enterprises, The Fremont Tribune offers competitive compensation and a full benefits package along with growth opportunities for employees.

To learn more about our company or to apply, please log on to www.fremonttribune.com/workhere and search for Fremont Tribune. Please include a cover letter, resume and 2-3 work samples.

I don’t know whether top editors have left since I interned there years ago — Brent, in particular — but they were wonderful and supportive.

Sorry to see Lee has swooped in to take over design, but that’s the nature of the biz. Still a shame.

What will be the largest paper in the state not controlled by Lee?

As far as dailies, looks like the Norfolk Daily News (15k-ish circ) is still run by the Huse family. Other than that, there's the Hastings Tribune (9k, Seaton) and the McCook Gazette (4k, Rust). Everything else is weeklies and college papers with 4k circ or less.
