We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic sports editor to lead our sports coverage with broad and in-depth reporting on local high school, professional and recreational sports for print, online, mobile and social publication, while managing stringers, reporters and columnists on multiple daily deadlines.
You'll get a chance to cover multiple local high school sports teams, some of the best Div. 3 NCAA hockey in the country, a thriving recreational sports scene, Vermont's Olympic athletes, and top-level short-track auto racing in the summer, among other things. You'll supervise and direct the assistant sports editor, a few part-timers and multiple freelancers, along with coordinating coverage with photographers and our sister publication, the Rutland Herald. From live game reports and short game capsules, to in-depth features, and investigations, this position is in the thick of the action.
This position requires strong organizational, writing, reporting and editing skills, and preferably two years of experience at a newspaper or similar online sports news outlet. This position also requires the temperament to work under deadline pressure, and to manage multiple deadlines, as well as familiarity with the lore, rules, scoring and terminology for sports, and curiousity about sports and people in general. You will be tasked with building on the newspaper's online and social media presence as relates to sports, and familiarity with Twitter, Facebook and video production is preferred.
The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus is a 7-days-a-week daily newspaper located in the heart of Central Vermont.
