Description: The Kentucky New Era, an award-winning mid-sized daily publication that goes to press five days a week, is looking for a passionate sports editor to lead our two-person sports team. The New Era, which has a paid circulation of 7,500, is based out of Hopkinsville, Ky., about an hour’s drive north of Nashville and 10 miles from Fort Campbell, home of the 101st Airborne Division.
The previous sports editor spent 19 years in this role, and while we were sad to see him go, we’re ready to revamp our approach to our sports coverage. If you always wanted your own sports section and think you can find innovative ways to produce great coverage beyond the standard run-of-the-mill game summaries, this might be the perfect the job for you. We’re looking for a renewed focus on player profiles and in-depth analyses, and we need an energetic, dynamic individual who takes ownership of his or her work.
We cover seven local high schools, youth athletics and four colleges, including Austin Peay State University, Murray State University, Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, in addition to the Tennessee Titans and much more. Local coverage is our bread and butter, but if that base is covered, there are some solid perks that can come with this position. Additionally, Hopkinsville is less than a 30-minute drive from Land Between the Lakes, one of the premiere outdoor recreational areas in the South.
Qualifications
- Ability to work nights and weekends
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or applicable field
- Minimum two years of experience working for a newspaper, preferably in the sports department for a daily publication
- Ability to write well-crafted stories, edit copy and layout pages using Quark Xpress, all on deadline
- Photography skills (a Nikon D700 camera will be provided)
- Knowledge of AP style
- Ability to manage multiple team schedules and utilize freelance writers to bolster coverage
- Knowledge of social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter
- Excellent conflict-resolution and customer service skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- An unrelenting passion for sports and the desire to produce the best sports section in the state
