Job Description:

Edits stories for accuracy, clarity, completeness, objectivity, grammar and spelling, organization, readability and style and for adherence to News Division policies. Makes corrections where appropriate.



Writes headlines and cutlines. Must be able to rewrite stories, take notes by telephone and write spot stories with clarity while on the desk.



Follows the directions of supervisory editors and consults with them and/or writers when making major changes in stories.



Demonstrates knowledge of the major issues, geography and sports figures in the circulation area. Also demonstrates news judgment based on this knowledge and on a thorough reading of the paper.



Job Requirements:

College degree required; journalism training useful but not essential.



Three to five years of professional copy editing and/or reporting experience desirable. Interest or background in sports desirable.



Language skills and ability to work with people essential. Typing ability essential; experience with personal computer useful.

When you click on the link, it says the job is either expired or unavailable. I presume this is the opening that was presented as a possibility last month by the ASE. At the time, the sports editor wasn't sure if he would get the position and, if he did, what level of experience it would have.

An assistant SE came on here about a month prior to year's end and said there MAY be two copy editing jobs opening at the CJ. Given that it was a Gannett paper, you can understand the skepticism. However, Gannett papers are advertising some openings, so who knows?

I'd say just send your resume and clips. You're ahead of the crowd if something does open.
