Hi all,
This job isn't officially open yet, but longtime Californian reporter/sports editor/designer/all-around great guy Tony Lacava is leaving the company June 26. We're sorry to lose Tony but expect to fill his spot as soon as possible.
The Bakersfield Californian is a ~35,000-circulation daily in a metro area of about 700,000 about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles and two hours east of the Pacific Ocean at the base of California's San Joaquin Valley. We are privately owned and operated and print our own paper at a facility in north Bakersfield.
We cover high schools as well as anyone our size, as well as a busy auto racing scene (three tracks; Sprint Cup champ Kevin Harvick is from Bakersfield), an AHL hockey team, an NBA D-League team, a Class A California League baseball team, a Division I university and a junior college with a powerhouse football program.
This position would be part of a universal copy desk, though a great majority of your time will be spent in sports. You'll read stories, send copy and photos to the web in our digital-first newsroom and then design pages for the print edition.
If you're interested in getting a jump before this job officially opens, email copy chief Christine Peterson ([email protected]) and sports editor Zach Ewing ([email protected]) with a resume and other relevant materials.

A quick update -- This position was not opened as we expected and was instead turned into a temporary job. That temp job has been filled. If a full-time position becomes available in the future, I will re-post.
