Skip Bayless

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

How is Skip Bayless not only still working in journalism, but able to hold high level jobs? This isn't the first time he's said something like this. Hell 25 years ago he was the originator of the absurd speculation about Troy Aikman's sexuality.

At no point in his career do I see anything resembling a unique point of view of abundance of talent. Yet he's managed to fail upwards.

Which is worse?

That Bayless says these things and believes them?

Or that Bayless says these things without believing them?

And to his "point,' there've been plenty of great leaders beset by depression, including Ulysses S Grant and Abraham Lincoln and William Tecumseh Sherman.

And if Dak Prescott banged open the front door, Skippy Boy would **** his panties into a little yellow puddle.
Like the time Jim Everett kicked Jane Rome’s ass on TV. Every time you hear Rome’s name you have to picture the little fraud cowering on the floor.

Bayless is a pile of snot without redeeming humane values. And an intellectual midget. Seeking mental health treatment for depression is no different than going to Orthopedist for knee problems. I’m convinced Bayless is in desperate need of actual mental health treatment, he’s a sick old man.

As others said regarding this show's ratings, it's really debatable whether it is a high-level job. I wouldn't have known about this at all if I hadn't seen it on sj. And there's so many opinion chairs now that the only way you get noticed is if you have an offensive take or an over-the-top emotional take, like Herbstreit the other day.

I'm with you on this SF except Skip is not still working in journalism.

Skip is working in television, not journalism. I argue that he’s playing a heel character but doesn’t have the sense to know when the kayfabe should stop.

I would agree that he's playing a heel and I also don't think anything is unscripted, which is why the Fox Sports statement fell on deaf ears with me.

If he is unclear where the line is, then his bosses should clarify it for him. He's been given way too many high profile chances for someone of his ability.

Low ratings or not, he's employed by Fox, one of the country's major sports television content producers.

He's not on some backwater radio station or yelling into the void on social media.

I think that's a semantic argument that people outside of the industry ignore. He's on TV for a major broadcaster talking sports, ergo he's a journalist in their minds.
Oh, my goodness, yes! He's no more a journalist than Hannity, Cuomo or Scarborough.

In addition to "ignore," I would also include "or fail to understand."

On World Suicide Prevention Day, Bayless said Prescott wasn’t enough of a man because he suffered depression about his brother’s suicide. That is some seriously toxic masculinity spewing from Skip’s mouth.

I would like to make a plea here. I don't want to get into details but I have seen family members live significantly happier lives because they went to a doctor and were treated for anxiety disorders and depression, sometimes after years of resistance. And not only were they helped but it improved the quality of life of their families, who are inevitably dragged into the problem. So just go do it.

I liked Bayless's Tom Landry book. He pretty much cut through the crap of all that before anyone else did.

He knew Landry was a fraud and got other people to talk about it.

He was hungry then. And shouting sportswriter shows didn't yet exist.

I don’t understand why anyone pays attention to this asshole
It’s an entire industry based on assholes, loudmouth but essentially ignorant talkers. Most people don’t have the basis of knowledge to understand the complexities of some sports. Watch the coaches feed on ESPN when they do the national championship. That’s some post graduate commentary and no one pays attention because they really don’t understand line play and coverage. And the people that have time to watch and listen aren’t that smart. So they play it for laughs but often often than not play it for the worst common denominator of spiteful losers.
