Watching my first rugby match (Ireland-France). It was on and I wanted something different than soccer. I have no clue on the strategy or rules, other than you want to matriculate the ball down the field, but this is a fascinating match.

I think Scotland-Wales and England-Italy are the other fixtures today.

Classic France in the first half. Play like ass for about 10 minutes, indifferent in attack, and then score an absolutely spectacular try.

If France manage to win, their D inside the 22 and especially the 5 deserves credit.

The craic in Dublin would be spectacular tonight.

PS England Italy is tomorrow, I believe. 10:00 am Eastern.

This is happily something I can not watch live and know I can catch up without being spoiled by updates on the sports.

Really surprised to see two Northern Hemisphere teams atop the rankings.

There is good element of strategy when you watch it for a time and compare it to NFL. Possession is much less of an emphasis in Rugby Union.

During my time in Australia, I became a big fan of the National Rugby League. Apparently you are either Rugby League or Rugby Union, and whichever you choose means you need to hold great disdain for the other.

CSNBC has the Six Nations (Union) and FX2 is playing a bunch of Australian Rugby League. Good way to learn the rules and the differences.
I've never understood Rugby League.

I've never understood Rugby League.

League has downs, like football, but they just roll the ball back to start the next “down” (I’m not sure what they call them). It’s more straightforward, but I find it much less tactical.

A “down” is just called “tackle” in League (first tackle, second tackle, up to five.) “More straightforward and less tactical” is a spot-on description. It was a good transition for me to apply my understanding of American football to League. I’m planning to spend more time learning Union in the coming months.

I've been a fan for 25 years. Maybe some day they can reclaim their glory of the 1980s.
Yeah - I’ve only started following them during the pandemic.

I sometimes wonder about their cap management and player retention.

BUT… the strangest thing about the NRL to me is that a player can sign with another club for future seasons when he hasn’t finished with his current club yet.

That brings up all kinds of questions in my mind like loyalty, drive, effort, and of course injuries. Bizarre.

I just hope

I get the rule differences. I just don't understand the interest in the game. League looks like a light workout for Union.

I can't wait until I can bet on this stuff.

Shocking how far gone England is right now. I don’t cheer for them, but I think rugby is better when they are strong.

Hoping Scotland steps it up against Ireland tomorrow.
