Yeah, I don't get that.

He makes money doing research, writing, and speaking. From what I can tell, he's never been on a public payroll or been on the dole.* (Though I suppose he received a stipend while he was in the Peace Corp.)

Looks to me like he's earned his money.


* And I should say that there would be nothing wrong with either of these either. But, even by stretching the definition, I don't see a problem.
