My paper's looking into wireless cards, and I was wondering which ones folks like, and which ones folks would stay away from. We want ones that are powerful enough to send photos, too. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My buddy bought a sprint card. It sucks. My iPhone is much faster.

We use Cingular and they have worked well during football season, even though we are sending from some tiny, dirt ass towns at times.
We send video and photos over it as well and haven't had many problems.

You could use a Blackberry and either
1) Tether it to the laptop.
2) Put the files on a SDMini card and then send from the Blackberry.

Doing this could get your shot to buy you a phone in the process.

I have a Verizon card and it is often very fast. But it depends on whether Verizon works well in your area; I have been a few places where it hasn't worked well.

Apparently, http://millenicom.com uses the Sprint network, but there is no service commitment and the cost is less. I haven't looked that deeply into it, though.

I use the Bluetooth with my Blackberry if I have to. No cords needed.

More often, though, I'll just find a McDonald's or Krystal or somewhere with WiFi.

Krystal's and Mickey D's has wifi?
Here it's Subway or Panera's for the free wifi. Bleeping Starbucks charges.

Since the boss is willing to shell out some cash, I'm willing to spend it. One of the guys in the office has an AT&T card, not sure of the details, but sending photos on it didn't work well. We're looking to get a couple, so I want to make sure we can actually send photos and stories from all over and that they're worth the money.

I just take the acoustic couplers and my Tandy into the gas station and hook them up to the pay phone. Works like a charm.

Right old timers.

Had a thread on this a while back: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/41347/

Seems like Verizon and Sprint got mostly good reviews, but doesn't look like anyone addressed photos...

McDonald's charges $2.95, I think. I'll do Panera if I'm filing during the day, but that's not an option at night.

And not only does Starbucks charge, but isn't the only option $10 for the day? Granted I'm always able to expense it, so it's not really a big deal.

I have home high-speed for the laptop, if I bought a wireless card could I just run off that puppy full-time and ditch the home connection? I'm pretty clueless about this stuff.

doesn't that encompass your entire area of circulation?

Only if you've got the acoustic couplers connected just right to the phone and your paper has an 800 number to call in on so you don't have to worry about running out of change midway through the call.

You can pay $6 if you're pretty sure you'll be done in one hour; if you go longer, you'll get hit with another $6 hour.

I think some of the places actually qualify as small dirt-ass towns, like almost 9,000 people. The tiny dirt-ass towns are the ones where the population might reach four figures.

I haven't seen that. At the Starbucks I've been to it's T-Mobile for $10. There weren't any other options.
