sending clips via e-mail

When applying to a job, I usually send clips/resume via postal mail. Do you think it's better to send the packet through e-mail? It seems like most editors say that is fine but maybe I'm just old fashioned in that regard. If e-mail is the way to go, how do you even send the clips? Do you save the file as a pdf and just attach the file? I'm sorry if these sound like stupid questions, but any advice would be appreciated.
