My car died on me last night. Damn thing overheated on me while on the way to work. Luckily, I was at least able to get it home. Now I must take the plunge and go out and buy a new one. Anyone have any car suggestions as to what kind I should get?

Civics are nice, but I prefer the Accord. The gas mileage is just slightly less, but the car is much more roomier. Either way, you can't go wrong with a Honda.

well looking for $7,000 or so. I have a 1997 Saturn now with 135,000 on it.

My second car was an Accord, and I loved it so. But I'd go with the Civic -- depending on the size of your family. I'm a single guy, so the Civic was the right choice for me.

I didn't like the one, an '05 Elantra maybe, I drove. It seemed like a toy, and the dash looked very, very cheap. Hondas are superior to Hyundais.

Hyundai is also defunct. I've heard good things about their Korean successor, Kia. Cheap little cars. Long ass warranties.

Kia is thriving last I heard. Hyundai is defunct. I'm sure you can buy a used one, but they're not making new Hyundais from what I understand.

I know someone who just got a 2008 with only 38 miles on it. Seems like the reviews on them were really good. Was thinking about looking at Kias as well.

They're also, according to their Web site, offereing some pretty big discounts right now, cc. Not sure if it gets a new one down into your price range, but it's probably worth checking out.

Hyundai's not defunct. Otherwise the guy who started the new dealership in my neighborhood would be pissed.

Hyundai appears to be going more upscale, with models like the Azera and Genesis. Kia is the more economy of the two Korean makers.

Quick research shows you're 100 percent right and I'm dead wrong. Apparently Kia went bankrupt in the 90s and Hyundai bought Kia. Kia is now a subsidiary, doing quite well (that part I knew.)

The rest is evidently a result of my being lied to by a car dealer (big surprise) and I never bothered to check.

Well it seems alot of car dealers can be liars. I am going to a dealer up the street tomorrow and see what kind of deal I can get. My credit is shot so hopefully I can get a loan.

CC, if you belong to a credit union (or your bank), call them before you go and get approved. That way you'll walk in knowing how much you can spend.

Also, PM OTD. He has loads of advice on buying cars and how to deal with dealers.
