Excellent reporting. The only thing missing was a report of a second explosion, this one blowing that school off the face of the earth. Heartless ****s.

Nice job to whoever decided to put a mortgage ad with fireworks on the Web page.

Great story. Strange town.

I say build a new cannon. Make it as flimsy looking as possible and let the folks who threatened this family take turns lighting it every week.

"And firing the cannon tonight against the Podunk Pipsqueaks is the Jones family. Hey, good luck with that. Fans, we recommend not sitting in the north end zone."

Thought 1: That HAS to be an Onion-style parody right? That CAN'T be real.
Thought 2: Thank God it's not the South. Because this thread would already be 10 pages if it was.
Thought 3: People suck.

And despite invitations to school friends, not a single person other than family attended his 16th birthday celebration in November, Bissell said.

wtf? what is wrong with these people?

The most stunning part of the story was that a cannon constructed by a high school shop class lasted for 20 years.

Apparently that was due more to luck than anything else, since few people in that town seem to have any brains.

Not a fan of litigation as a means to solve problems, but this school district is a bunch of dumb bastards and deserve anything they get. Firing a cannon with a stress fracture and seemingly doing it without insurance?

Then people saying that "he is the one who chose to stand next to an exploding object?" Actually, he chose to take part in ROTC and had every reason to believe the activities he would partake in were thoroughly vetted for his safety so long as he followed directions.

The douchebag minority of humanity, as exemplified by the assholes who care more about a ****ing cannon tradition than another human being, is the reason why we are all ****ed, in general.

You of earth are idiots!

Well, at least it'll keep him out of Iraq and far away from other numbskulls (like staff officers) who would wilfully put his health in even greater jeopardy.

What's this got to do with conservatism?

Forget it. He's on a roll.

Yeah, well, sorry, rook. You're wrong this time.

This whole issue has a hell of a lot more to do with conservatives vs. liberals than many want to admit.
