Of the modern stuff, anatomy of Jane Doe is very good. Lags a little at the end, but overall it’s a strong horror film. Meanwhile, the VVitch was crap.

If you are looking for something a little more vintage and obscure. Suspiria is freaky little film from the 1970s. It’s got some amazing visuals.

If you want a lost classic, try Carnival of Souls. It’s a creepy black and white film from the 1960s.

I recently rewatched the original Sleepaway Camp, which is famous for its twist ending, but the entire movie is strong because the cast is authentic. These arent 20 year olds playing teens, they are real teens and it shows.

Paranormal Activity (well it was a cool little movie when it came out(

cloverfield

the exorcist never gets old

I love scary movies.

Get Out isn't exactly a "little" movie, but it's a helluva thriller.
It: Chapter One is among the best horror movies I've ever seen.
A second for Cloverfield, which was awesome.

Also worthy of watching:
The Descent
28 Days Later
I Spit on Your Grave
The Ring

I'm sure there are more, but those are off the top of my head.

Cabin in the Woods is my favorite horror movie of the past 10 years. I don't know how heralded it is.

Oh yeah The Descent (book was even better)
28 days also good
The Ring yeah but Rengu or Ringu, the Japanese original was better

Train to Busan
Drag Me to Hell
Rosemary's Baby (if you're of a mind to overlook Roman Polanski and his history)
Pontypool
The Wicker Man (1973, spare yourself having more Nicholas Cage in your life)
Battle Royale
Martyrs
The Descent
Audition (1999)
Let the Right One In
A Tale of Two Sisters (steer clear of the US remake)
REC (2007)
It Follows

Tombs of the Blind Dead. It can be found on YouTube in several cuts. It can lag at times, but some of the set pieces: the ritual scene, the undead on horseback and the train attack are legitimately terrifying almost 50 years later.

Coraline. When the mother offers to give the little girl button eyes? Yowzah.

Suspiria is amazing. Dario Argento at his best.

Shoutout to The Descent, which ****ed me up more than most horror movies. Tremendously done.

Also shoutout to the earlier mention of Sleepaway Camp.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Cannibal Holocaust.

I'll second Autopsy of Jane Doe. Caught it on Showtime a while ago. Knew nothing about it, started when it was about 10 minutes in. Legitimately scared me in parts, probably the first since Signs to do that. Enjoyed it -- and I don't like horror movies in general.

Reviving this for 2021’s Halloween season.

— I’ve heard good things about In the Earth.
— Bad things about Lamb.
— excited about Halloween Kills.

Oh there's some good stuff coming. The Antlers looked good. (Jesse Plemmons).

More Blumhouse movies on Amazon Prime too (last years were entertaining).

Grave Encounters is a movie about people shooting a ghost hunting TV show and it gets really creepy. Does found footage very well and it will screw with your mind.
