So here's the situation:

You have a coach relating off the record a story that was told to him by someone else, in which he uses a derogatory term for Cajuns (if you haven't heard it, check Deadspin or Every Day Should Be Saturday).

Is this worthy of an "official" statement by the university? On the one hand, I don't think there are many Cajuns who take offense to the term Saban used. The conversation was off the record, meaning Saban could technically operate under the assumption that the comments wouldn't be recorded and put on the Internet.

Personally, I think if a university issued an official statement every time a head coach said a bad word, nobody would ever get anything done. Is this an issue or a smear campaign?

If I were Alabama, I would steer clear of commenting on this. All this does is give LSU fans another reason to be pissed at Nick Saban.

Derogatory? We call ourselves coon asses (the term he used) with pride. I'm not offended, but I know many LSU fans who are (although by now they are just looking for any reason to be pissed at Nick). They need to get over it.

And yes, LSU-Alabama this fall will be one crazy week.

Sincerely,

Johnny Dangerously

Yeah, it used to be you couldn't go into a convenience store in Louisiana without seeing a "Official Coon Ass" trucker cap selling for $3. I haven't noticed 'em lately, but that's probably more of a result on how everything has become more homogenized than any sort of coon ass pride movement.

We've come this far and no one's said that Nick Satan is an asshole? sad... sad...

Fewer people are proud of being called 'yats' than 'coon-asses.'

Anyway, you can spot the coon-asses by their bumper stickers:

"Inbred baby on board"

"Proud parent of an honor student at Angola Correctional Facility"

Dan Patrick just said Jeff Darlington should be fired, or at least severely disciplined, for what went down here with an "off-the-record" statement.

Going only off what I have read or heard, I might agree.

No. 1 -- Coon ass is not really derogatory to Cajuns. If those South Florida guys thought that was titillating or something, they don't know Louisiana.

No. 2 -- Jeff Darlington should be in a whole heap of hot water for sharing notes with another media source that he hadn't used and didn't intend to.

Doesn't it just feel like this tape was tossed around like a baseball?

If they treat him like that, pretty soon Mr. Saban might become leery and cynical of the media.

Shame on you, Jeff Darlington.

It doesn't matter if Saban knew you had your tape recorder on. You violated a trust with a source. Shotglass is right: it sounds as if the recording was e-mailed all over the place.

I know you meant that last line as a joke, Ace, but other sources hear about this kind of stuff and decide to clam up. Thanks a lot, Jeff. Hope you and your buddies got a big laugh.

Ike,

I was going for bitterly sarcastic, Ike. Here's a guy we ***** at for being nasty and untruthful to the media and we show our professionalism like this. Real nice.

if this doesn't get a reporter fired, what will? even a **** like saban has every right never to go "off-the-record" again.

thanks for nothing, jeff.

Seriously, there are several La. peeps at my gym in Alabama ... and they often refer to each other as coon-asses when talking about each other. "You seen that bald-headed coonass around yet?"

It struck me as odd the first time heard it years ago, but I'm telling you: It is NOT an inflammatory term.

At least not among these people.
