SCHNEIDER ON ROUND ONE (was he watching a different debate than you guys?):

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) — The first half of the debate is over — here's a few observations:

Obama was largely on the defensive for the debate's entirety. It's a role he's unaccustomed to, and at times he looked shaky and off his game — especially on the health care debate when both Hillary Clinton and John Edwards hammered him on not mandating coverage for everybody.

But he ended on a high note on one of his key issues: Iraq. He brought home the costs in a much more effective way than the other two candidates.

Clinton looked strong on health care — she made clear she's been through the fight before, and spoke authoritatively on how to healthcare passed. But her early squabbles with Obama may have turned viewers off immediately. It's unclear if she was able to win them back.

Edwards was strong throughout, though he's still struggling to be heard over Clinton and Obama. He appeared to take the high road when both of them got bogged down in petty back and forth, and seemed to successfully sharpen his differences with Obama. Viewers will likely give him a second look.

Man, what a ****ty question regarding Toni Morrison's comment about Bill Clinton. There's basically no right answer -- though Obama seems to be trying pretty hard.

Obama was asked whether Bill Clinton was the first black president: Gave a long complimentary response, and then added, 'I would have to see his dancing ability first to know if he was in fact a brother.'

Probably just should have said, 'I will be the first black president' but it was a good answer.

I don't think he appeared shaky on his health care policies, but I agree with them, so I am sure I am biased. I think he's right that you can't mandate health care when it's so unaffordable.

Ask people from the state of Tennessee how nationalized health care would work. The state has been ravaged by debt for years from TennCare, a Clintonian idea that ... well ... didn't work. And we're supposed to believe it would work on a national level because???

That's how I feel. I don't think universal health care works in this country, but it should be far more affordable than it is now. Bureaucracy has infiltrated every government program. Why should I believe health care would be any different? Fairy tale policies aren't going to get my votes. Policies that can and will work will get my vote.

And no one should wear orange/brown, ever, unless she or he is a Muppet.

I can't believe I'm typing this.... ;D....I like orange as an accent color with brown. But I'm just an earthy-type of girl.

Anywho, I like the way the debate is going now with everyone sitting down and not taking pot shots. It's a lot more productive without the bickering.

Do politicians realize this?

You just can't cheapen a valuable commodity and not expect people to abuse it. You just can't. There is plenty of greed on all sides of this issue — **** the government, **** greedy insurance people and **** pretentious doctors — but under our current system, nationalized health care will not work. If we're going to attack it, attack the greedy ****ers on all sides.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you guys pay for health care? About 23% of my gross pay goes to Blue Cross/Delta Dental/whoeverymyvisioncareis.
