My handicap at the end of last year was 14.3. It's now over 19, because I've completely lost it inside of 100 yards
And I've got almost the opposite issue. I can't make a full swing on either the driver or 3-wood without a massive double cross. I've resorted just in the last couple of weeks to bringing the clubhead up no higher than my shoulder, transfer my weight and concentrate on getting square at impact.

Surprisingly, I still have decent distance and am keeping it in the fairway. But I'm struggling to stay under 90 this summer when I should be easily shooting in the mid-80s. Too many lost balls and penalty strokes.

Women's fourth major, the Evian in France. Brooke Henderson makes two eagles and an ace for a 64 and heads to a playoff with Haeran Ryu, who didn't make a birdie until 18. Henderson eagle on 18 after making bogey on 17. Aki Iwai missed a birdie putt on 18 that would have made it a three-way playoff.

My regular course is very old (founded 1895) and its greens, while sloped and some two-tiered, are very small. So when I go to more modern courses with bigger greens, my lag putting skills have faded to near non-existent. One time on TV I heard Kevin Kisner say long putts were one skill the pros have that almost no amateurs do. God, I need work to get up to lousy in that category.

One rule of thumb that helps me keep things in perspective is that a lag putt for a pro that is within 90% of the distance (3' for 30 footer) is pretty good. Not everything is a tap in for the pros.

It’s almost that time again to crown the champion golfer of the year.
I rue that Ivor Robson is no longer with the R&A (or with us at all). One of my best obscure impressions.

"Now on the tee, from USA, Tiger Woods!"

Modern 450cc drivers are easier to hit than any club in the history of golf. Get one lesson from a decent pro on hitting the driver and you'll be fine.

And the players imitating him was always a hoot, preferably by trying the most Robson-melodious names. Louis Oosthuizen! Mark Calcavecchia!

Scottie’s “struggles” this year show how tenuous golf is. A few putts drop and he’s having a “great” year.

I played in a member-guest a few years ago and the other team’s guest was a guy who played No.1 at Ole Miss, just striping it, looked like Aberg, 6’4”, statuesque.

I asked “what’s the margin between SEC and PGA”?

Him: “It’s all putting.”
There's a very good women's amateur player who has won our big event at work and returns every year. She's 27 now, and made some waves when she decided not to turn pro when done with college.

I have her on record - and so does every other place that has covered her, because she contends often - that she just didn't want to pro "lifestyle" and grinding away at golf all day, every day.

That may be true. She has a great job. I've also watched her miss 2- and 3-footers more than any player at her level should.

She never says it, never refers to it, but in her head and heart I'm sure she knows she has the yips and that's why she really didn't turn pro. She makes tough 8-footers all day long. But she has missed short putts for as long as I've covered her.

After rallying from 4-down with four to play at our place this summer, she lipped out a 3-footer to lose on the 19th hole. As she was lining it up, I told a colleague, "No way she makes this." He replied, "I know."

Putting is everything.

At any level. My threesome in our senior league shot a collective one-under today, with all of us hitting the ball well. Made one putt over five feet. Group in front of us shot seven under. Made everything.

In my weekend match on Sunday, I was even after 7 but couldn't make any of my birdie putts (had about 5 between 30 and 15). Buddy makes a birdie putt of 25 and another par save from 30 when I had one at 15 for birdie (on the same line!). Down 2 after 7. Yeah putting was/is not everything but A LOT.

It really ****ing sucks that the only story coming out of the damn U.S. Junior is Charlie Woods getting allegedly spooked by a light camera shutter and missing match play in a playoff. There's an entire tournament being played with really good players, and every headline is about him. Gross.

Heard on the radio this afternoon that, despite the LIV championship being slated for next month in Michigan, no infrastructure has been built yet on site.

That’s modern golf media in a nutshell. Someone not named Woods would have had to shoot 57 in stroke play to get a headline.
