The gist of the story, built upon quotes from several unnamed players as well as linebacker and team captain Bradie James, was that Owens was sowing dissension in the locker room by expressing resentment toward quarterback Tony Romo, whom he felt was throwing too many passes to tight end Jason Witten -- who happens to be Romo's close friend and roommate on the road.

Just plucked this off the ESPN ombud thread, and it struck me I still see this every once in a while in stories on pro athletes.

Seriously, are the any pro teams any more than put more than one guy in a room on the road? I find that hard to believe. Heck, I doubt big-time colleges even do it.

A lot of pro teams still do it unless the player specifically requests a single and sometimes the player pays extra for it.
I would guess almost all colleges still double up players on the road.

If I'm on a pro team, especially for baseball, basketball and hockey, I don't think I'd like to be alone in my hotel room on a five-night road trip.

Company is a good thing, and can help the team be a team.

This from an NHL story on LA Kings Drew Doughty....

The "I Love L.A." life is handled by defenseman Matt Greene, who was asked to take in Doughty at his Hermosa Beach residence. The "On the Road Again" chore is handled by Dustin Brown, who rooms with Doughty on trips.

I'm really surprised to hear that NFL, or any of the major pro sports, that this happens.

I just cover baseball, so that's what I know, and I think it's been in the CBA for at least 20 years that players all get their own rooms on the road.

Well, at least 11, cuz I started in 97 and they didn't have roomates then.

Or you don't want to have to pick someone else's hair out of the drain or look at their toothpaste residue in the sink or have them hog the bathroom in the morning or use the one outlet in the bathroom for THEIR flat iron when you need to get ready too.

Or miss an entire night's sleep and be of no use to anybody the next day because your roommate snores so loudly all night you can't get any rest. Or because your roommate can't fall asleep without the TV on, and you can't fall asleep with the TV on. Or what IJAG said, or all of the above.

Why in someone's mind this is automatically about homophobia is more a commentary about that person than it is about the topic (which I don't think mentioned sexual preference until a certain person introduced it into the arena).
