RIP Tripp Halstead

I don’t know how many of you were following this story, but he was a kid who was almost killed at 2 when a tree branch fell on him outside his day care.

The story went “viral,” and his parents then spent the next 5-plus years updating millions of people via Facebook on Tripp’s recovery. It was as heart-wrenching as it sounds, especially for parents of young kids. The outpouring and sense of community that was built there is one of the few encouraging things I’ve seen from social media.

Anyway, Tripp died last night of what appears to be respiratory failure:

When I was 10 we were moving into a new home. My dad was installing this big metal pole that would hold a TV antenna. It was probably 10 feet high. Somehow it fell over. I happened to be right underneath and it smacked me right on top of the head. It had absolutely no effect. Ii barely even felt it. Lucky me.

RIP little Tripp.

Knowing sj.com's affinity for unknown RIPs, I was guessing from the name that this was a frontman or bassist for a band like Blink 182, or someone from the Clinton cabinet.

****ing TBIs. I hate them. So much grief and tragedy for the families involved, and they cut across everything. The classics are the teenage driver who has a bad wreck, or the elderly who fall and hit their heads, but they can hit anyone no matter the age or sex. Dad working construction and something heavy falls off the scaffolding overhead. Kid at the playground gets thrown from the whirlygig, or runs in front of someone really working out on the swing set. People of any age who slip taking a shower in the tub and whack their head.

We know a woman whose husband and son had a wreck in their pickup truck, and both of them took a TBI. Her life... sigh. We know a couple whose son is a permanent five year old. Terrible stories, lives in ashes.

It's like that bridge falling in Florida. The timing of being under that bridge at that exact moment is the definition of the worst kind of luck.
